The development of miniature tensile specimens with non-standard aspect and slimness ratios for rapid alloy prototyping processes

This work aims to evaluate the use of miniaturized tensile specimen (MTS) characterise mechanical properties alloys developed through rapid alloy prototyping (RAP), where high throughput tests are required on relatively small amounts material. Tensile were conducted at a variety strain rates and with increasingly smaller sizes, ranging from larger specimens conforming ASTM/ISO standards, down non-standard specimens. The gauge lengths ranged 50 80 mm for standard 5–10 To generalize MTS designs, three alloys, DP800, DP600 316L stainless steel, adopted. results obtained designs compared those designs. show that can give repeatable yield strength (YS), ultimate (UTS) uniform elongation (eU). maximum result differences YS, UTS eU 7.37%, 7.71% 11.9%, respectively, DP comparing dimensions. These values 13.56%, 14.03% 19.5%, respectively steel. total (ef) increases as dimension decreases. geometrically dependent constants (n) 0.2, 0.31 0.11 316L, respectively. However, Young's modulus is hard determine precisely conclusion this testing be used confidence means predicting across range steels.
